What are dermal fillers

Volume placed beneath the skin.

Dermal fillers are injectable gels placed beneath the skin to restore volume, smooth folds, and refine facial contours. Most modern fillers use hyaluronic acid (HA) — a sugar molecule your body already produces that holds water and creates lift. A few use other materials: calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) for deeper structure, or poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) to stimulate your own collagen production over time.

Fillers and Botox solve different problems. Botox softens muscle motion that creates dynamic wrinkles. Fillers add volume to areas that have lost it — like cheeks that have flattened, jowls that have descended, or lips that have thinned with age. The two often work together as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Filler treatments take 30 to 60 minutes. Results appear immediately and last six months to two years depending on the product, area treated, and individual metabolism.

How it works at Reviv

Trained injection, conservative dosing.

At Reviv Med Spa in Millbrae, dermal fillers are administered by our Medical Director Dr. Gayle Misle, MD, and our Aesthetic Nurse Megan Sosnick, RN — both with extensive training in injectable filler technique. Filler is a precision craft — the difference between a result that looks refreshed and one that looks "done" comes down to product selection, placement depth, and respect for natural facial proportion.

We carry the major filler product lines so we can match the right product to each area:

Juvederm collection by Allergan Aesthetics
Voluma XC, Vollure XC, Volbella XC, Skinvive — the broadest HA range, with products tuned for cheeks, midface, lips, and skin quality.
Restylane collection by Galderma
Lyft, Kysse, Defyne, Contour, Silk — a flexible HA family covering volume, contour, and lip work.
RHA collection by Revance
RHA 2, 3, and 4 — designed for facial movement and dynamic wrinkles.
Belotero Balance by Merz Aesthetics
Soft, integrative filler for fine lines and superficial placement.
Radiesse by Merz Aesthetics
Calcium hydroxylapatite for jaw, chin, and structural support.
Sculptra Aesthetic by Galderma
Poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates your own collagen production over months.
Evolysse Smooth & Form by Evolus
The newest FDA-approved HA line in the U.S. (2025) — cold-flow gels for fine lines (Smooth) and deeper folds (Form). Dedicated Evolysse page →

Most fillers contain lidocaine for comfort; we may add a topical numbing cream beforehand. The injections are precise — small amounts placed strategically — and most patients describe the sensation as a 2 to 3 out of 10. The full treatment takes 30 to 60 minutes.

You will see immediate volume from HA fillers, with final placement settling as swelling resolves over two weeks. We schedule a complimentary 2-week touch-up assessment so we can fine-tune placement on follow-up.

Areas commonly treated

Nine areas, one toolkit.

In your consultation we'll identify which areas would benefit most for your goals. Most first-treatments cover 1–2 areas with one or two syringes total.

Cheeks

Restore midface volume and lift that softens with time.

Undereye hollows

Tear-trough placement — precise work to soften shadow.

Nasolabial folds

The smile lines from nose to mouth — softened, not erased.

Marionette lines

The lines from mouth corner to jaw — addressed with structure.

Jawline contour

Definition along the jaw and chin — frames the face.

Temples

Hollow temples filled to round the upper face.

Lips

Subtle volume and border definition — see /lip-fillers/ for dedicated work.

Chin reshaping

Projection and proportion at the lower face.

Smile lines

Perioral softening for a refreshed lower-face look.

How we inject

Anatomy first, then the needle.

Safe injecting starts under the skin — the muscles, fat pads, and vessels that make every face different. We map your anatomy before we treat, choose the right depth and plane for each product, and inject conservatively with vascular safety front of mind. It is the difference between a result that looks like you and one that does not.

What it addresses

Volume that's gone, contour that's drifted.

Volume loss

Cheeks that have flattened, midface descent, hollows that show with age — the primary indication for HA filler.

Contour and proportion

Jawline definition, chin projection, temple hollows — structural placement that frames the face.

Folds and creases

Nasolabial folds, marionette lines, perioral softening — softened, not erased.

Collagen stimulation

Sculptra works differently — poly-L-lactic acid that triggers your own collagen production over months.

Skin quality

Skinvive and similar HA boosters address surface hydration and skin texture rather than adding volume.

Before you book

What to know, in four lines.

  1. 01

Filler is precision work — product selection, depth, and placement matter more than syringe count. We treat conservatively and add at the touch-up.

  2. 02

HA fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero) are reversible with hyaluronidase. Sculptra and Radiesse are not — they metabolize naturally over time.

  3. 03

Filler adds volume; Botox softens motion. They solve different problems and often work together. We carry both.

  4. 04

Pricing is per syringe and quoted in writing at consultation. No surprise charges, no day-of upsells.

What to expect

From day zero, to a year-plus.

Day 0

Treatment day. 30–60 min appointment. HA fillers give immediate volume; you walk out with visible change. Most patients return to work the same day.

Days 1–7

Mild swelling and occasional bruising peak at days 2–3 and resolve over a week. Cold compresses the first few hours help. Avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, and saunas for 24 hours.

Weeks 2–4

The product fully integrates and final shape settles. Complimentary 2-week touch-up assessment — we fine-tune placement if anything reads asymmetric or under-volumized.

Months 6–18

Gradual fade as the filler metabolizes. Cheek and jaw fillers like Voluma can carry up to 2 years; lips and high-mobility areas refresh sooner. We schedule a refresh visit when you start to notice the volume softening.

Pre & aftercare

Before your visit, and the days after.

Before your visit
Schedule a Consultation
We will discuss your goals, medical history, and any concerns. Disclose any medications or supplements you are taking, as some can increase the risk of bruising.
Avoid Blood-Thinning Agents
Discontinue use of blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, garlic, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba at least one week before the procedure. Always consult with your primary care physician before stopping any prescribed medications.
Refrain from Alcohol
Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24-48 hours prior to your appointment to minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment to ensure your skin is well-hydrated, which can help with recovery and results.
Avoid Certain Skincare Products
Refrain from using retinoids, glycolic acid, and other exfoliating or irritating skincare products on the treatment area for at least 48 hours before your appointment.
Schedule Appropriately
Plan your treatment at least two weeks before any important events to allow time for any potential bruising or swelling to subside.
Prepare Your Skin
Arrive at your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen.
Stay Relaxed
Try to remain calm and relaxed before your procedure to help your body respond positively to the treatment.
After your treatment
Do Not Touch or Rub
Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the filler from migrating.
Stay Upright
Remain upright for at least 4-6 hours after the treatment. Avoid lying down or bending over during this period to ensure the filler settles correctly.
Apply Cold Compresses
Use a cold compress to the treated area to reduce swelling and bruising. Apply the compress intermittently for 15 minutes at a time.
Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners
Continue to avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment to minimize bruising and swelling.
Gentle Cleansing
Cleanse your face gently with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid using any harsh skincare products for at least 24 hours.
Avoid Heat Exposure
Stay away from direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas, and hot tubs for at least 48 hours to prevent increased swelling and bruising.
Avoid Other Facial Treatments
Postpone any other facial treatments such as facials, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels for at least two weeks to ensure optimal healing.
Monitor for Side Effects
Mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site is normal. However, if you experience severe pain, allergic reactions, or other concerning symptoms, contact your medical provider immediately. Use a high-SPF Sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage, as treated areas can be more sensitive to sunlight.
Avoid Smoking
Refrain from smoking as it can impair the healing process and affect the longevity of your results.

You'll receive these filler instructions in writing before your visit and we review them with you in person. Questions during recovery? Call (650) 697-3339 — we answer same-day. See the aftercare hub for the universal recovery principles and when to call us.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

How long do dermal fillers last at Reviv?

HA fillers typically last 6 to 24 months depending on the product and the area. Lip fillers metabolize faster (6–12 months) because the lips are highly mobile. Cheek and jaw fillers like Voluma or Lyft can last up to 2 years. Sculptra (collagen stimulator) builds results over 3–6 months and lasts 18–24 months.

Will I look "done" or overfilled?

Not when it is done well. The "filler face" look comes from over-volumization or chasing trends rather than respecting individual proportion. At Reviv we treat conservatively — we would rather under-fill at the first appointment and add at your 2-week touch-up than over-correct on day one. HA filler is reversible (with hyaluronidase), but the better practice is precision from the start.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

Pricing starts at $750 per syringe. Most first-treatments use one or two syringes; products vary in price. Final cost depends on product, area, and volume needed — book a consultation for an exact quote. Reviv membership members receive 10% off.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Most patients describe it as a 2–3 out of 10. Topical numbing is applied beforehand, and most fillers contain lidocaine which numbs as the product is placed. Lips are the most sensitive area and benefit most from numbing.

Is there downtime?

Minimal. You can return to work the same day. Bruising and swelling peak at days 2–3 and resolve over a week. Avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, and saunas for 24 hours.

What is the difference between fillers and Botox?

Botox softens muscle movement to reduce dynamic wrinkles (lines that appear with expression). Fillers add volume to areas that have lost it. They solve different problems and often work together. We carry both at Reviv and will recommend what is right for your goals.

Are fillers reversible?

Hyaluronic-acid fillers (most modern fillers) are reversible — an enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves them. Non-HA fillers (Radiesse calcium hydroxylapatite, Sculptra poly-L-lactic acid) are not directly reversible but metabolize naturally over time.

How soon will I see results?

HA fillers show immediate results that improve as swelling resolves over the first 2 weeks. Sculptra is different — the collagen-stimulating effect builds over 3 to 6 months across a series of treatments.

Are there side effects?

The most common side effects are bruising and swelling at injection sites that resolve in 1–2 weeks. Less common side effects include lumps (usually massage-correctable) or vascular complications (rare with experienced injectors who aspirate before placement). We screen carefully and use techniques designed to reduce risk.

Who should not get dermal fillers?

Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have bleeding disorders, who have an active infection at the injection site, or who have certain autoimmune conditions affecting connective tissue. We screen at consultation. If you have questions about whether filler is right for you, ask us.
